Is there an alarming climate crisis?
FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA:
"Closing the Carbon Loophole and Cracking Down on Polluters:
We must take immediate action to reduce the carbon pollution that threatens our climate and sustains our dependence on fossil fuels. We have had limits in place on pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other harmful emissions for some time. After decades of inaction, we will finally close the carbon pollution loophole by limiting the amount of carbon polluters are allowed to pump into the atmosphere.
Closing the Carbon Loophole. By stemming carbon pollution through a market-based cap, we can address in a systematic way all the energy challenges that we face: curbing our dependence on foreign oil, reducing our use of fossil fuels, and promoting new industries right here in America.
Protecting American Consumers. Revenues generated by closing the carbon loophole will be returned to the people, especially vulnerable families, communities, and businesses.
Promoting U.S. Competitiveness. Ensure a level playing field for domestic manufacturing and secure significant actions to combat climate change by our trading partners."
www.whitehouse.gov
"A scientific study commissioned by the Bush administration concluded yesterday that the lower atmosphere was indeed growing warmer and that there was 'clear evidence of human influences on the climate system.' The finding eliminates a significant area of uncertainty in the debate over global warming, one that the administration has long cited as a rationale for proceeding cautiously on what it says would be costly limits on emissions of heat-trapping gases." New York Times, May 3, 2006
"...the media..continue to present what they call a 'balanced picture' ...as a result the public remains confused...the science has become clear...a vast majority- -99% of scientists realize that it is true, that the earth is getting warmer..." James E. Hansen, Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences. On Point, NPR, June 22, 2006
"In my view, the evidence is very strong and the effects of climate change are very alarming. The National Academy of Sciences has stated in unequivocal terms that the effects are substantial and the result of human activity." Senator John McCain
